Sam Kerr Nears Chelsea Return After ACL Injury as Nike Launches First Signature Boot for Women’s Player

Sam Kerr tore her ACL in January 2024 and has been allowed to return. ACLS take a while to heal, but this is longer than expected. There are rumours she reinjured herself with the Tillies; however, this was never confirmed by Australia or Chelsea.

With one year left on her contract after an extension last year and no minutes left in her contract, Chelsea wants her back scoring for them in hopes of winning the quadruple.

Since making her Chelsea debut in January 2020, the 31-year-old has scored 99 goals in 128 matches.

It has been reported that she took part in a friendly behind closed doors at a similar time to the friendly between AC Milan and Chelsea last Saturday.

She has recently been back training with her teammates in preseason and at the training camp in the Netherlands.

Sonia Bompastor says Sam Kerr could make her return in the WSL opener against Man City next Friday

"She got some minutes in pre-season games...we need to be a little bit patient [because she has been out for so long], but she is in a good place and I'm really pleased with her recent performances. She is strong mentally and not too far away."

“I could be lying,” she soon added.

Due to complications, Kerr missed the Paris Olympic Games and required a second surgery.

She has spoken at length about how “lonely” the rehabilitation process was.

They hope she’s fit for the end of the year and ready for the Asian Cup in March, which will determine whether they directly qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027.

The Matilda’s star has insisted there’s no reason she can’t return to her prolific goal-scoring best once she returns.

Kerr said: “'My contribution is goals; it's as simple as that.

For the last, however many years, I've been among the top goalscorers, if not the top goalscorer on the team, and that's where I want to return. I've got high expectations of myself.

'I have a lot of confidence in my ability, so my contribution is straightforward. Its goals. That's what I'm here to do and normally do, so there's no reason why I can't do it again.'

'During an injury, you're often alone,' Kerr said.

'So it's good to be back with the girls, just doing the same training sessions as them rather than solitary rehab sessions.

'It's nice to be back with the girls, back on the pitch, and I'm excited. I'm looking forward to being out there, scoring goals and having fun.'

In other Sam Kerr news, she is the first women's athlete to have her own personalised football boots.

Nike Launches First-Ever Signature Boot For Sam Kerr. Nike has unveiled the first Player Edition Mercurial Superfly for Sam Kerr, capturing her fearless attacker's mentality, her deep Aussie roots, and her undeniable presence as one of the game's defining athletes.

Nike first gifted the West Australian a pair of boots when she was 16. A few years later, she signed on as a contracted athlete, and by 2018, she had become a global face for the brand.

Nike has described this player edition as celebrating Kerr's 11-year journey as a professional footballer. This shoe hopes to uplift the next generation of female footballers and raise the game's standard.

“Through the creation process, it was always important that the boot tell my story: how a kid from East Fremantle got this far by following her dreams,” says Sam, referencing her upbringing in suburban Perth, the capital of Western Australia.

“The colours of the boots are what I think of when I think of home: Perth’s ocean and sunsets,” says Sam. “It’s a reminder of where I’m from.”

The sock liner also includes messages to inspire the next generation of footballers to embrace their authentic selves on and off the pitch, with the phrase “Be who I am” on one foot and “Be who you are” on the other.
