Tottenham dominate but Chelsea punish as Keira Walsh brilliance defines champions and contenders

Tottenham Hotspur did almost everything right in the opening 45 minutes – except score. Spurs tore into Chelsea with pace, intent and confidence, dominating the shot count and striking the crossbar, but football’s oldest lesson came back to haunt them. Champions do not need many chances; they only need one. Against the run of play, Chelsea found theirs through a moment of Keira Walsh's brilliance, turning a half owned by Spurs into a game firmly under the control of the defending champions and exposing the acceptable margins between contenders and winners in the WSL.

Keira Walsh worldie relieves pressure on Sonia Bompastor as Chelsea edge Spurs

Given the external noise surrounding the defending champions, this game carried added pressure for Chelsea. Dropping points in back-to-back games for the first time in 11 years meant this fixture carried greater significance than usual. It was also the first time Sonia Bompastor had lost consecutive matches in her managerial career, which spans more than 180 games across multiple competitions. Even with her contract extended through 2030, Chelsea needed a solid performance at Tottenham to convince supporters that she remains the right manager for the job.

WSL January 2026 transfer window recap big moves and strategic signings

Chelsea approached the January transfer window cautiously, opting to focus on contract renewals rather than major acquisitions. The club has reportedly held discussions with key players, including Sam Kerr, Hannah Hampton, Aggie Beever-Jones, and Lucy Bronze, though none of these extensions have been formally confirmed. Manager Sonia Bompastor indicated that private conversations had taken place and expressed confidence that both the club and the players are aligned on plans. Speaking after Chelsea’s 5-1 defeat to Manchester City, Bompastor admitted that the club would have liked to be in a stronger position in the previous window, acknowledging lessons learned and the need for more proactive action in the future. Rumours continue to circulate regarding Georgia Stanway’s potential summer move to Arsenal, while speculation linking Sjoeke Nüsken with Bayern Munich seems unlikely. Nüsken remains central to Chelsea’s plans after signing a contract extension until 2027, and any departure is expected in future windows rather than imminently.
