Jana Fernandez moved from Barcelona to City Lionesses this summer to join the English side in their first season of the WSL.
The London side's captain, Kosovare Asllani, said, “ Personally, I would not be happy for us to be mid-table at the end of the season; a good season would be top four.”
Barca Femeni sporting director Marc Vives confirmed that Fernandez asked to leave in search of a bigger role elsewhere.
An agreement was reached, with her transfer completed for 300,000 euros.
Marc Vives said, “There were moments of instability, caused by both of us. In the end, she openly asked to leave to find a project where she could play a bigger role.
“We reached an agreement, and that was that.”
Barcelona are currently in a state of financial disrepair and the women’s side had to let players go and only signed one player as a free agent.
They reportedly need one million euros to balance the books. Their A team has only 17 registered players, whereas their B team has only 12.
Fernandez joined FC Barcelona at just 12 years old and steadily rose through the ranks before debuting for the first team in November 2018 at age 16, 9 months, becoming the club’s second-youngest debutant in its professional era.
She signed her first professional contract in the summer of 202 after gaining experience between Barca B and the first team.
She won it all at Barca and played for her country and youth ages and came runners-up in the Women’s EURO 2025 in Switzerland.
