The must-watch WSL fixtures before the winter break

Published on 14 September 2025 at 11:06

We are just weeks into the WSL season, and the competition is already close. Here is my list of the must-watch games coming up before the winner break that you should tune into, from derby days to main stadium action to big team rivals fighting it out on the biggest stages.

Sunday 21st 2025- Leigh Sports Village Stadium

Manchester United v Arsenal

United and Arsenal see themselves as title contenders, and this early-season clash could be a tone-setter. United will want to prove they can consistently challenge the top three, while Arsenal know they cannot afford to drop points if they’re serious about the title.

Expect a tactical battle between United’s pressing game and Arsenal’s technical midfield. Key matchups like Leah Galton vs. Katie McCabe down the flank could decide it.

Sunday 2nd November- Stamford Bridge

Chelsea v London City Lionesses

A special matchup under the bright lights of Stamford Bridge. Chelsea remain the team to beat, but London City Lionesses will relish the chance to make a statement in one of the league’s most iconic stadiums. It’s not just about the result—the occasion and the opportunity to showcase the depth of London’s women’s football scene.

This isn’t your typical David vs. Goliath clash. London City Lionesses, ambitious and hungry, get the chance to showcase themselves on one of the biggest stages in English football. For Chelsea, it’s not just about three points—it’s about showing dominance in front of a home crowd at Stamford Bridge.

Saturday 8th November- Emirates Stadium

Arsenal v Chelsea

Chelsea won for the first time against Arsenal at the Emirates last season, beating them in both league games.

This game, win or lose, could change the club's title race and impact the rest of the season.

The biggest rivalry in the WSL, especially with the fans, is expected to have a sold-out stadium, high stakes, and possibly aggressive and controversial decisions.

That humiliation still lingers for Arsenal, who will be desperate for revenge in front of what could be another 50,000+ crowd. Beyond the bragging rights, this game often swings the momentum of the title race. A win for Arsenal would prove they’ve learned from last season’s failures; another Chelsea victory could make them near untouchable heading into the new year.

Because who can forget Sockgate…

Sunday 16th November- Etihad Stadium, Manchester City v Manchester United

Manchester Derby, what else and at the big stadium. City’s technical style against United’s physical edge always produces drama, and with both sides chasing Champions League qualification—and maybe more—this could be one of the standout fixtures of the entire season. City, masters of possession and technical football, will look to control the tempo, while United thrive on intensity and direct attacking play. These matches have been tight, physical, and emotional in recent seasons—derbies where form rarely matters.
