2025: The Year Women’s Football Took Centre Stage

Published on 21 December 2025 at 22:59

2025 has been a significant year for women’s football and women’s sport more broadly. From the Red Roses to the Lionesses, women were given equal platforms to their male counterparts and achieved success at the highest level.

This is a personal list of women’s football moments from 2025, in no particular order. It reflects my perspective as a journalist who follows the game closely, rather than a definitive ranking. Alongside these moments are professional experiences that occurred while covering the sport.

Outside of this list, I completed my journalism qualifications, achieving Gold Standard NCTJ. During the year I wrote for EA Sports and The Times. I was also featured on the Chelsea website discussing my support of Chelsea Women. Due to a change in open training availability, I was able to attend at short notice

.

Chelsea Women winning the domestic treble again was a major moment. The League Cup final was my first football press pass and first press conference. Chelsea then secured the league title unbeaten at Stamford Bridge, where the trophy was presented. The FA Cup completed the treble, and I was present as the players collected their medals and lifted the trophy.

The Women’s Euros were another key highlight. Throughout July, I wrote for the EA Sports app covering the tournament. England’s path to lifting the trophy included penalty shootouts, late goals and dramatic knockout matches. Germany vs Sweden stood out as a neutral fixture, while England vs Wales was covered from the front row. The final was decided on penalties, with Hannah Hampton playing a decisive role, followed by the victory parade, which I attended with media accreditation.

Another significant moment was Arsenal winning the Champions League. This marked the first time in 17 years a WSL side lifted the trophy and highlighted the continued growth of English women’s football.

Chelsea’s 1–1 draw with Barcelona in the Champions League was also notable. After five years of home defeats against the Spanish champions, Chelsea avoided defeat for the first time. The match was played as a single-leg league phase fixture, with Chelsea producing a strong performance despite using a second-choice goalkeeper.

Overall, the year reflected the continued growth of the women’s game and expanding coverage opportunities. Across 2025 this included 23 matches, 14 clubs, eight international teams, eight press passes, six publications, two Lionesses media days, two finals and two countries, alongside launching a TikTok page and relaunching this blog.
