Spain vs Germany: Pressure on the champions as injuries open the door for an upset

It was 0-0 in Germany; the home side had the better of the chances, mainly through Klara Bruhl, who was constantly pressing and pushing Spain's back line, which led to Cara Coll making some strong saves.

Spain, coming into this game, has a serious injury crisis with its Barcelona stars due to overwork at the club, as Aitana Bonmati, a three-time Ballon d’Or winner, is ruled out with a fracture of her fibula.

Spain won the World Cup in 2023 and the last Nations League they lost out on the Euros. They only win trophies when both Alexia Putellas and Bonmati are playing.

After their weak first leg performance the pressure will only mount as they host Germany in Madrid with this game being their managers fourth one in charge.

Spain hope to retain their title after losing out on the Euros in the summer against England on penalties and reenact their win against Germany in the semi-finals of that same tournament but without the goal scorer from that game Bonmati.

Germany will hope to carry through the moment from the first legs but to sharpen their final touch as they were unable to secure an advantage at home as Rebecca Knaak and Shekiera Martinez missed the best chances of that game while Klara Buhl and Jules Brand struck the wood work.

If they win it will be their first trophy in nine years.

There have been 10 meetings between the two teams. Spain have won just one of those games while Germany have won five times, with their other four contests ending in draws.

Spain have scored 26 goals in this year's Nations League. Only Germany (29) has scored more.

The hosts Spain  have kept clean sheets in each of their last three games and five of their last six.

Germany are ranked fifth in the latest FIFA Women's World Rankings while Spain are ranked first.

coming into the first fixture it seemed it would be Spain to dominate but that was lacking in the first leg and since losing another key star for them.

This gives Germany every opportunity to shock the Spanish fans after a run of back-to-back draws.
