Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement for Swedish defender Hanna Wijk to join the club from BK Häcken in January 2026, subject to international clearance and a work permit. The 22-year-old has agreed a long-term contract and will wear the number 22 shirt as she prepares for the next stage of her career in north London.
Wijk spoke of her excitement after completing the move, describing an emotional first moment in a Spurs shirt. “I’m thrilled to be here at Spurs. It feels great to be here, I got goosebumps when I put on the shirt,” she said. She explained that moving abroad had always been a dream and that England had long appealed to her. “It has always been my dream to move abroad from Sweden and play in this league. I love the league, and I watched it a lot from home, so I’m really looking forward to playing here in England, and also for Spurs,” she added.
Wijk also spoke about the team and how she feels her style fits the system. “The team seems very good. I have watched many games, and I like the way they play. I feel like this is a good place for me to be. As a full back, I like the way the full backs play here, so I think it’s a perfect fit for me.”
Head coach Martin Ho described Wijk as a modern, athletic full-back capable of playing on both sides of the defence. “Hanna is a modern, athletic full back who can play on both the right and left side,” he said. “She brings intensity, intelligence and reliability, with the ability to defend aggressively while also possessing strong technical foundations in possession.”
Ho also highlighted her versatility and potential. “Her versatility, work rate and understanding of the game give us flexibility and balance in wide areas. Hanna has a strong foundation and clear potential, and we see this as the right environment for her to continue developing her all-around game at the highest level.”
The Spurs head coach added that Wijk had attracted strong interest elsewhere. “Hanna was in demand across the market, and we are very pleased that she decided Tottenham Hotspur was the right club for the next stage of her career,” he said. “Her choice speaks to the ambition of the project and the clarity of the pathway we are offering, and we are confident she will grow with us while helping raise the competitive standards of the group.”
Wijk’s rise has been steady and impressive. After youth spells with Floda BoIF and Lerum IS, she moved to BK Häcken in 2020 at just 16 years old. She spent the early part of that season with the club’s under-19 side before making her senior debut in July and helping Häcken lift their first-ever Damallsvenskan title.
Comfortable operating on either side of the back line, Wijk continued to collect silverware the following season, winning the Swedish Cup and starting in the 3 0 final victory over Eskilstuna United. During that campaign, she made 32 appearances, five of them in the Champions League, scoring twice and registering six assists.
Despite still being only 19, Wijk became a first-team regular in 2023, starting 27 of Häcken’s 29 league matches. That consistency continued the following season, when she helped the club reach the Champions League quarter-finals, the furthest Häcken have progressed in the competition since 2012/13.
Last season, Wijk was named one of the club’s vice captains and played a central role in another title-winning campaign as Häcken lifted the Damallsvenskan for the second time in four years. She featured in 25 of the 26 league games and finished her time at the club having made 107 senior appearances.
On the international stage, Wijk has represented Sweden at multiple youth levels before receiving her first senior call-up in September 2022. Two years later, she earned her first cap in an 8 0 victory over Luxembourg in October 2024.
Her move to Tottenham represents both a reward for her rapid development and an opportunity to test herself in one of the most competitive leagues in the world. For Spurs, it is a signing aligned with long-term ambition, while for Wijk it marks the realisation of a long-held dream to compete at the highest level in England.
