Tottenham Mean Business: Spurs’ January Window Signals a Shift in Ambition

Tottenham Hotspur Women have been one of the most active sides of the January transfer window, with Julie Blakstad becoming the latest addition in a run of business that reflects both short-term ambition and long-term planning.

Blakstad joins the Spurs following the expiration of her contract at Hammarby IF, subject to international clearance and a work permit. The 24-year-old Norway international arrives on a permanent deal, bringing Champions League experience, attacking threat and international pedigree to North London.

Her arrival is part of a broader recruitment push that began before the window officially opened. Norwegian winger Signe Gaupset was secured early, a move that highlighted Spurs’ focus on identifying emerging talent with significant development potential.

That Scandinavian emphasis continued with a double signing from BK Häcken. Defender Hanna Wijk adds versatility, composure and tactical intelligence across the back line, while Matilda Nildén offers pace and directness in vast areas. Both players arrive from a club widely respected for producing talent ready to step up to elite European leagues.

Spurs have also addressed immediate needs by signing Japan international Maika Hamano on loan from Chelsea. The midfielder brings creativity, technical quality and valuable WSL experience for the second half of the season.

This concentration on Scandinavian recruitment reflects a broader trend across the WSL. With leagues in Sweden and Norway currently out of season, January offers a natural window for movement. Those leagues continue to serve as proven stepping stones, developing young, tactically intelligent players who can adapt quickly to the physical and technical demands of English football.

With multiple deals completed across key areas of the pitch, Spurs have moved decisively in January, building momentum and making a clear statement about the project's direction.
