Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Smilla Holmberg on a long-term contract, with the 19-year-old right-back joining from Hammarby IF in Sweden.
Born in Stockholm, Holmberg joined Hammarby at the age of seven and progressed through the club’s academy before making her senior debut in 2022, just 15 years old. Over four seasons with the senior team, she made 96 appearances, scored 10 goals, and played a key role in winning the Swedish league title in 2023 as well as the Swedish Cup in 2023 and 2025
Holmberg made her senior international debut for Sweden against Italy in the UEFA Women’s Nations League in May 2025. She was later named in the squad for the UEFA European Women’s Championship that summer, making three appearances as Sweden reached the quarter-finals. She now has nine senior caps and one goal. During Euro 2025, Holmberg was tasked with taking the seventh penalty in a shootout despite several more experienced players still available. She missed the penalty and was left in tears, showing the early pressure she has faced at the top level.
“It’s always been my dream to play for Arsenal,” Holmberg said. “This is a very special moment for me and my family, but it’s also about joining a club with the highest standards and a strong winning culture. I’m excited to start this new chapter, to continue developing my game in a demanding environment and to compete at the highest level. My ambitions align with the club’s and I want to help win silverware here.”
Arsenal’s Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley welcomed the signing, describing Holmberg as one of the most exciting young full-backs in Europe and praising her composure and maturity. Head coach Renée Slegers highlighted her versatility, athleticism, and potential for development, adding that she looked forward to working with Holmberg as the club aims for further success.
The transfer is subject to the completion of regulatory processes, and Holmberg will wear the number 31 shirt. She could be in line to make her debut as soon as Saturday, when Arsenal face Manchester United as the Women’s Super League returns from the winter break.
Holmberg’s move to Arsenal marks her first experience playing abroad after spending her entire career at Hammarby. The deal had been in discussion for some time, with Holmberg first linked to the club in October of the previous year, and comes at a key point as Arsenal look to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.
