Manchester City have signed USWNT star Sam Coffey until the summer of 2029.
This has been described as the midfield transfer of January. She has moved from Portland Thorns where she guided them to the NWSL play-off semi-finals as captain.
She was named in the league’s Best XI for a third time in four seasons. She is rapidly approaching 50 senior caps and a key star in the US Olympic gold medal team and a SheBelieves Cup triumph in 2024.
The US international firmly established herself; she has been described as combative, composed and intelligent. She has been described as one of the best holding midfielders in world football. She even won the NWSL Championship in her debut campaign in 2022.
The midfielder said on her move: “It’s a club with so much history, so much success, so much influence in the city.
“Manchester is not somewhere I’ve been before, but there’s something about it that I felt I was led to and called to.
“I think it’s also a place that just has proven its investment in women’s soccer and being a part of this movement that is going on.
“Seeing the facilities, the support the team gets and all the efforts they are putting in for the women’s side is such a huge and positive side and something I’m honoured to be a part of.”
She is known for her tucked-in shirt, composure on the ball and excellent reading of the game. She is described as the “traditional” number six.
In her debut season, Coffey helped Portland Thorns win the NWSL Championship and was included in back-to-back NWSL Best XI’s in 2022 and 2023, the latter alongside new City team-mate Kerolin.
Emma Hayes, her international manager described the 27-year-old “I think her game has gone to a whole new level,” she said in a July 2025 press conference.
“It’s all of it together, it’s who she is in the locker room, it’s who she is on the field, it’s how she goes about her business, it’s the contributions she makes to the team.
“No one tucks their shirt in like Sam Coffey.”
“She’s an impeccable learner, she’s always wanting to improve her game. It never ends, it’s never enough.”
