England fans will come together today to celebrate one of the greatest Lionesses of all time as Fran Kirby is honoured for her retirement from international football. Before kick-off, FA Chair Debbie Hewitt will join Kirby’s father and brother for a special pitch presentation recognising her career, her impact, and her 10 years in the England shirt.
As part of the pre-match tribute, the UEFA EURO trophy will be carried onto the pitch by Kirby herself, a fitting role for a player who helped lay the groundwork for England’s rise and played a significant part in the historic Euro 2022 triumph.
Ahead of the celebrations, Sarina Wiegman paid a warm tribute to the midfielder:
"Oh, do you have 10 minutes? No, I think, of course, I have been part of her journey for the last four years, and I am very grateful that I have been part of that, but before that, she was already achieving at the height of her levels. I have worked with teams that played against her, and she is, yes, I think she is an incredible player."
Wiegman added:
"She is so intelligent, and she makes the team really better. I also think she is a great person. I really love to work with her. She is a good teammate, and there is so much more to come."
And on her future:
"She is not finished yet with football, so we can still enjoy watching her. It is excellent. We are looking forward to seeing her tomorrow and celebrating her international career. It is also nice to see her still playing for Brighton. I hope she will stay in football for a long time."
Fran Kirby Announces Her Retirement
Fran Kirby confirmed her retirement from international football at the end of the last international break, bringing to a close one of the most influential and emotionally powerful careers in the history of the Lionesses.
She decided after hearing that she would not be attending the Euros this summer. Although it came with sadness, she has since found her peace with it. Kirby has spoken openly about feeling excited to watch the tournament as a supporter and to finally enjoy the experience without the constant pressure of analysing opponents.
Despite the timing, Kirby has nothing but praise for England manager Sarina Wiegman, crediting her for the compassion and honesty shown during their conversations. She wanted to stay with the squad until the end of camp so she could tell her teammates face-to-face.
“I wanted to stay for the rest of the camp, and I wanted to tell the girls in the changing room to their faces so I could thank them all for everything and wish them good luck,” she said. “And they did not find out through social media.”
Kirby entered the season knowing this Euros would probably be her last chance at a major tournament. She worked tirelessly to put herself in contention, investing everything she could. After discussions with Wiegman, selection became doubtful, a complex reality for any competitor. But she respected the honesty of that conversation.
“It is tough for someone to be told that. But I respected honesty. Then I could give her my honesty too.”
A Lioness’ Career That Changed Everything
Fran Kirby retires with 77 caps, 19 goals and a legacy that will last far beyond numbers. She represented England at four major tournaments, won bronze at the 2015 World Cup, reached the semifinals in 2017 and 2019, and helped deliver the most significant moment in the history of English women’s football: Euro 2022.
She made her debut in 2014, scoring against Sweden in Hartlepool, and her final appearance fittingly came at Wembley in England’s 6–0 Nations League win against Portugal. Over ten years, she became one of England’s most creative, technically gifted and fearless players, earning the nickname Super Fran from supporters who adored her intelligence, close control and courage.
Throughout her career, she overcame setbacks that would have ended many others’ journeys. Illness, injuries, and long periods of recovery shaped her story, yet each time she returned with the same determination and passion to wear the England badge.
She said she hopes to be remembered as “someone who never gave up, always kept fighting, always kept pushing. Even with my situation now, I fought every single time I went into camp to be available for Euros and to get picked for Euros. That is something I am really proud of.”
At the heart of her internal drive was her mother’s dream that she would one day play for England. Kirby fulfilled that dream many times over. Her journey, with all its highs and heartbreaks, inspired an entire generation of young players.
Forever Super Fran
Fran Kirby leaves the England national team exactly as she played for it. With honesty, courage, grace and a heart that never stopped giving.
Her international chapter closes, but her career is far from over. She will continue to shine in the WSL, and the women’s game will continue to feel her influence long after she hangs up her boots.
Today is about celebrating a Lioness who gave everything. A player who fought through every challenge. A teammate loved by all. A role model to thousands.
Thank you, Super Fran. Forever a Lioness.
