The England men's World Cup squad announcement is the most highly anticipated and talked-about moment in English football this year, except for Pep Gaudia leaving City. Thomas Tuchel is not helping the “German spy” stigma with his shocking selection.
His ideology is about being a squad in tactical roles rather than relying on reputation and stats alone. While the fans are less than convinced and have no confidence that it will actually come home on the 60th anniversary of the 1966 World Cup, Tuchel is very confident in the group he has selected.
Though the manager did speak about the country's extraordinary talent among players, it seems to fans that he has not brought those players with him. This squad signals a new selection philosophy prioritising tactical roles, specific game-state solutions such as penalties, and psychological cohesion over traditional metrics such as club minutes or total goals alone.
Thomas Tuchel made some big omissions from the team, including Harry Maguire, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Jarad Bowen, Lewis Hall, Levi Colwill and a lot more. Morgan Gibbs-White has had 18 goal contributions and 14 since January, one of the most productive English midfielders in the league, with more goal contributions than Jude Bellington this season.
Which tells us Tuchel is not selecting players based on their best form, season, or narrative, but on complementary roles within a fixed tactical structure.
He said the deceased were deliberate and emotionally difficult: “To reduce it was difficult, sometimes painfully difficult. Even over the phone, I felt the emotion. I called all the players who were in camp with us at least one time. A lot of them deserved to be with us.”
England has been accused in the past of a lack of cohesion, something seen in the golden generation, when it was club, then country, in that order. Still, the German suggests there's a spirit among the players that reportedly influenced who was selected.
The most shocking inclusion in the squad is Ivan Toney. He does not play in Europe; he plays in the Saudi Pro League, not a highly contested or competitive league at all, and has only played 7 minutes in a match under Tuchel in the past 16 months. His reputation is the cleanest. The 60-year-old: “When it came down to all different kinds of scenarios, he was back in the picture.” This might imply his inclusion is for penalties, but Cole Palmer can score penalties, and he has not been called up since June 2025 and has not been involved in any of the international friendly pre-World Cup home camps. He will provide the backup for captain Harry Kane alongside Ollie Watkins, who has also been recalled to the squad after scoring 10 goals for Aston Villa since being left out of March's internationals.
In an attack, the numbers are difficult to ignore.
Noni Madueke has 5 goals across 37 appearances.
Cole Palmer has 10 goals in 30 appearances, yet is overlooked.
Bukayo Saka has 11 goals in 46 appearances.
Jarrod Bowen has 9 goals in 43 appearances.
Phil Foden has 10 goals in 45 appearances.
So while Foden and Palmer might not have had the most joy this season compared to others they have statistically outperformed, especially Palmer, in terms of Noni Madueke and Saka based on goals scored in appearances, though their absence has been justified by many due to the below-par contributions, which is still more than others and the huge amount of competition in that area of the field. Real Madrid right-back Alexander-Arnold is another bold omission, albeit a more predictable one, having not won a cap since last summer. In-form Nottingham Forest forward Morgan Gibbs-White, Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, Newcastle defender Lewis Hall, Man Utd's Luke Shaw and West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen are other notable absentees as Tuchel made an eye-catching first tournament selection.
The inclusion of John Stones has been widely discussed, especially given his limited minutes at Manchester City this season and his injury-prone nature compared to Harry Maguire, who is fit and has recorded far better stats.
John Stones
- 8 appearances
- 361 minutes played
- 0 tackles won
- 14 clearances
- 2 interceptions
Harry Maguire
- 22 appearances
- 1565 minutes
- 16 tackles won
- 101 clearances
- 12 interceptions
The England manager firmly backed Stones: “Yes, otherwise I wouldn’t have picked him. He’s a world-class player… a proven winner. We analysed a lot of his training data… The good news is he was available. He was not out.”
Newcastle defender Tino Livramento has been selected despite missing the past month with a thigh issue. At the same time, similarly versatile Spurs full-back Djed Spence has been included despite breaking his jaw on Tuesday.
Other notable inclusions include Man Utd midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, Arsenal duo Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, and the experienced duo of John Stones and Jordan Henderson. The latter causes great outrage with the fan base anytime they receive a call-up under the new manager. Another area of confusion is the call-up of Djed Spence, a player who is currently facing relegation with Spurs, but Tuchel suggests it does not matter. Thomas Tuchel on Djed Spence, the reason for his inclusion: "First of all, he was excellent in every single match he played for us. He suffers from the third coaching change at his club. Since then, he hasn’t had a lot of minutes. Of course, he suffers from the situation. He is part of the situation as well at Tottenham.”
Spence v Hall
Spence
29-appearances
1966 time played
26 tackles
52 clearances
17 interception
Hall
29 appearances
2089 time played
30 tackles won

Liverpool might be one of the biggest English clubs, but that doesn't mean their players are guaranteed a spot in the national team. Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad has no players from the Merseyside club. It is the first time in 40 years - since the 1986 World Cup - that has happened.
It's understood Tuchel wanted to boost his playing options with the Arsenal contingent of players, who would join up late with the rest of the squad due to the Champions League final. England will be without Rice, Saka, Madueke and Eze for their first pre-tournament friendly against New Zealand.
While I understand the squad Tuchel had and won the Champions League with, Chelsea did not have the big-star, personality-driven players like Harry Kane. Still, as a unit, these decisions are questionable. Many fans are debating if it was better in the Gareth Southgate era, many joking they wish they could go back to those days. Either way, it will not be surprising, given the players included and excluded, if England do not make it far this summer at all, because fans do not currently think it's coming home. Only time will tell if this big risk will pay off.
