Manchester United Sign Barcelona Star Fridolina Rolfö Amid Criticism Over Women’s Team Backing

Manchester United have been criticised for years about how they treat their women’s football team, from kicking them out of their training facilities, not investing into the team that could win a trophy unlike the men’s, to the new face of the club Jim Radcliffe not turning up to the FA Cup final they won but would for the men, or him asking their Captain Katie Zelem what she did at the club.

The list could go on, and this summer transfer, there was a lack of signings; they signed one player and lost a lot more. Still, they have just made a big move to prove themselves and hopefully suggest that they are ready to build their women’s side, which was only founded in 2018, the year the WSL went entirely professional. Hence, they are considerably behind in their development compared to Chelsea or Arsenal.

Since Barcelona women are in financial ruin thanks to the men’s side, they have not and will not be able to keep significant players; a lot have already left, and more still need to be offloaded to balance the books.

One of, who left Barca was Fridolina Rolfo, who moved to Manchester United on a two-year contract.

She left Barca on a free, and they reached a mutual decision to terminate her contract one year early, likely because they could not pay her wages.

Since joining them in 2021, she has won four Liga F titles and two Champions League trophies, scoring 40 goals in 131 appearances.

The 31-year-old described joining United and the WSL because she believed it was the strongest league in the world.

"I have been fortunate to enjoy lots of success at Barcelona and other clubs I have played for, and now I want the same at Manchester United," she added.

Rolfo, who has also played for Bayern Munich, has 313 senior club appearances and 113 goals.

She earned her 100th cap for Sweden during Euro 2025 last month and has scored 33 goals for her country.

It has been reported that she received a big offer from Malmö, the biggest team in her home country of Sweden, and that she would become their highest-paid player; however, she wanted to experience the WSL.

Her first competitive outing could be next week's UEFA Champions League play-off match against PSV.

United's first WSL match is on Sunday, September 7th, against Leicester City.
