With six months left on Renee Slegers' previous contract, things looked concerning for Arsenal Women's future.
After their worst results in the first nine games in the WSL since 2014, the pressure mounted on Renee Slegers.
Was she up for it? Did she have the experience? Was the Champions League win a fluke?
The fact that the club ran the contract down to six months concerned fans as to whether she would get a new one.
But it was announced that she has signed a three-year deal till 2029, which shows not just her but the club's commitment to the future, given her previous deal was for only 18 months.
The 36-year-old became interim head coach in October 2024 following Jonas Eidevall’s resignation, and took the job full-time after overseeing an 11-match unbeaten run. Though they finished as runners-up to Chelsea
But we were 12 points behind the Blues.
The Gunners remain undefeated at home in the WSL under her leadership.
“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract here, as I believe we have so much to achieve together – this season and in the years to come,” Slegers said. “From playing in the academy and being in the stands watching Arsenal win the Champions League in 2007, to living it with our players, staff and supporters last summer, I’m immensely proud to have shared this journey with Arsenal, a club that omeans so much to so many people and to me.
“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract here, as I believe we have so much to achieve together – this season and in the years to come.”
The club’s director of women’s football, Clare Wheatley, said of Slegers’ new deal: “Renée has proved to be an elite coach with the capabilities to lead us as we continue to challenge to win major trophies. Together with our supporters, we look forward to continuing our successful journey with Renée in the years to come.”
Arsenal also confirmed the appointment of their former striker Jodie Taylor as women’s technical director. The former England international, who won the Golden Boot at the 2017 European Championship, has been working as the club’s technical services manager.
