World Sevens Football London Launched With WSL-Only Format in Bold New Experiment

Women's World Seven London Edition officially launched.

Brentford will be the official hosts of this competition after hosting the Champions Cup semi-finals earlier this year, becoming a stadium for women's football.

This event will only feature WSL sides in a shocking move, which could either work really well or ruin the whole point of the competition. The reason is to bring together the best of women's football, but it seems counterintuitive if they are only including WSL teams. The purpose is to bring electrifying entertainment and next-generation innovation with the core elements- intense football in a festival-style environment where player personalities are on full display.

The style of football is 7v7, and the matches are only 30 minutes long with unlimited substitutions.

So it is very brave to make it exclusively WSL sides, especially as in their previous two competitions, there have been mixed teams of American and European players.

The competition will be a three-day tournament, set for 28-30 May, featuring eight teams. The last European competition inaugural title was won by FC Bayern Munich, who defeated Manchester United. The tournament in Portugal last May also included Manchester City.

It was announced that this competition would take place about a month ago, but all official confirmations were removed from the pages.

It was announced that the first teams to take part were eight, with 12 WSL teams. Aston Villa Women and Manchester United Women are the first clubs to be confirmed, with the rest to be announced in the coming weeks.

Aston Villa Women's Managing Director Maggie Murphy called the format "a different kind of energy," adding that it will be "an engaging and fun experience - not only for the fans, but also for our players and staff." Manchester United Women's Director of Football Operations & Women's Football, Ameesh Manek, noted, “Everyone is looking forward to returning to the World Sevens Football tournament. It is an excellent format that I know the team really enjoyed last year.”

Jon Varney, Brentford FC Chief Executive, said, “We are really pleased to be welcoming the London edition of World Sevens Football to Brentford. It is a unique tournament that promises fans fast-paced, exciting action. We hope that by bringing events like this to the Gtech Community stadium, we can continue to inspire the next generation of players and fans, and support the growth of the women’s game.”

W7F co-founder Jen Mackesy framed the London Edition as a progression for the series. "World Sevens Football London Edition is the next step, showcasing one of the game's leading leagues and creating something that is tailored to their clubs, their players, and their fans while staying true to the energy and creativity that define W7F."
