Published on 29 April 2026 at 16:31

Millie Bright, Chelsea captain will retire at the end of the season less than a year after stepping away from international duty back in October after nine year spell. Her current contract will end this summer and she has outwardly expressed that she wanted to retire at Chelsea.

The 32-year-old, still relatively young to retire but has decided to her her 12 year long career at chelsea. She joined them from Doncaster Belles in 2015 and has made a record 314 appearance. She has won 20 trophies during that time, only the Champions League trophy alluded her through her unprecedented domestic dominance.

She also earned 88 caps for Englad and won the Euros on home soil in 2022 and led her country as captain to a World Cup final in 2023.

"Millie has played such a big role in the growth of the women's game, with both England and Chelsea, and she has achieved so much along the way - what she has given to her club and country is incredible," said Lionesses head coach Sarina Wiegman.

"It is hard to put into words the impact she has had. She has inspired so many people, pushed standards and shown girls and boys what can be achieved in the sport."

Her abilities on the pitch have changed. She is no longer as fast and has made errors that directly led to oppositions scoring. While still the captain the clubs dependence on her at the back has waned with the likes of young defender Veelre Buurman have pushed for minutes

She has not featured for the club since Febuary with their 2-0 victory over Spurs due to a persistent ankle injury. The phsycial and mental toll of elite football has clearly played a role in her decision. She has only made 14 WSL starts for Chelsea this season as the team starts a period of regeneration and evolution in the squad.

“Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I’m now ready to say goodbye to playing football,” Bright said.

“I’ve given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. I’m always going to be Chelsea just in a different way.”

She will remain connected to the club as a trustee of teh Chelsea Foundation and will also take on a role as a club ambassador.

Her final game and goodbye will be Chelsea's final WSL match of the season against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on the 16th May, though it is unclear whether we have already seen Bright play her final game for Chelsea or if she will recover from her injury in time.

She became the longest-serving player in Chelsea Womens history across 12 seasons. She has won eight WSL titles including six consecutive titles between 2020-2025. Six FA Cups, four league cups, two domestic trebles in 2021 ans 2025 the latter going unbeaten.

She broke Jordan Nobbs record for the WSL all-time appearance record and could finish her career with 215appearancese depending on her injury.

She became the club captain in September 2023 under Emma Hayes.

Bright retired from international football in 2025, having withdrawn from England’s Euro 2025 squad after stating she was unable to give “100% physically and mentally”. England went on to win the tournament, with a new generation of defenders.

But in recent yea,rs, the 32-year-old has explored opportunities outside of playing, most notably by starting the "Daly Brightness" podcast with former England team-mate Rachel Daly.

They faced backlash in April for using a promo image of Chelsea team-mate Lauren James' sending-off at the 2023 World Cup, prompting an apology from the producers.

Bright also has a presence on social media, first becoming prominent in 2022 when she regularly posted TikTok videos with goalkeeper Mary Earps.

Bright had an offer from another WSL club to extend her playing career, as well as a non-playing job opportunity at Chelsea on top of her ambassadorial role, but has decided to seek new opportunities.

A club statement confirming the news read: "We thank Millie for her incredible contribution to Chelsea and are delighted to announce she will be staying on at the club as a trustee of our foundation, continuing her passionate work in supporting others, which began while she was representing us on the pitch."

After calling time on her football career, Millie Bright sat down to write an open letter to you, the Blues supporters...

Chelsea fans,

I’ve been thinking about my future for a while now. There have been so many factors to consider, but I have decided that I'm ready to say goodbye to playing football. I’m hanging up my boots.

I always said I would retire at the top and at this club. I'm living up to what I said. I’m not prepared to fight for any other club or pull on any other shirt.

It's time.

This club means everything to me. In my career and my life, Chelsea has been the reason I get up every single day and push through the hard times to get back to the good times.

I owe everything to this club. The people that I've met, the friends that I've made, and of course, the memories. I can take those recollections home with me, and when I have kids, tell them all about my career, show them the pictures and the trophies. It's been the biggest gift.

I never expected what has happened in the last 12 years. I never even expected to be a footballer, let alone be a professional, playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, and lifting all those trophies together.

The opportunities presented to me since 2015 have been incredible. It's a life that I never thought I'd live, and I've been blessed enough to live it. So much has changed, and I've learned so much.

But none of that would’ve been possible without you, the fans.

You’ve always had my back, whether it's on the pitch or off the pitch. To me, you’re not just fans who attend the games and support the club. You are family.

And as many of you know, family is everything to me. But I'm lucky enough that I've had two: my family back up north and my Chelsea family.

Some of you were there for my first game back when we played in Staines. And in the years since, I’ve got to know even more of you. You’ve always been there for me, always believed in me and had my best interests at heart. I want to thank you, because it is so unique and special.

We’ve had our little things, like when you brought me Jelly Babies and Creme Eggs, but more importantly, you’ve always asked if I’m ok, how my Mum and Dad are, and above all, treated me like a human being, not just a footballer.

I would say that is the thing I will miss the most, but I don't think that's ever going to go away. I’m not going anywhere, I'm still going to be Chelsea, just in different ways. I want to watch games as a fan – and I’m putting it out there that I still want my Jelly Babies and Creme Eggs because I can eat as many as I want now!

Joking aside, I've given everything I could on the pitch. I can't physically give any more.

I feel like I need to look after myself now, and I'm ready to give back to the club in a different way. I've seen so many people I care about pass away over the last couple of years, and I think I need to learn to live a little and appreciate life a little bit more.

The girls still have a lot to play for this season, so I want you to get behind them as much as you can, and let’s take the time to celebrate all the wonderful moments we’ve shared.

I’ve always said I want to be a fan. Now I can be. So, I’m looking forward to coming to the Bridge and watching games alongside you all. I’ll make sure to bring a flag with me.

See you there.

Your captain,

Millie
