Chelsea FC signed their fourth goalkeeper Livia Peng

Let’s discuss Chelsea's goalkeeper situation, as they just signed Livia Peng.

To understand this, you must go back to the summer of 2023 when Hannah Hampton moved from being the number-one keeper at Aston Villa to Chelsea, who already had two number-one keepers with Ann-Katrin Berger and Zecira Musovic. This move came as a shock, but look at us now

In April 2024, Ann Katrina Berger left Chelsea to join Gotham FC after battling Musovic for the number-one goalkeeper position.

Then, the battle was between Hampton and Musovic for 2024; however, Emma Hayes and Sonia Bompastor seemed more inclined to use the homegrown star. Everyone assumed we would say goodbye to Musovic in January. Still, instead, we signed another keeper to make it four keepers as Katie Cox, Chelsea Academy star, got her senior call-up this season.

Then we signed Femke Liefting from the Dutch side of the Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. She was out with a long-term foot injury, Musovic announced she was pregnant, and Chelsea went down to two keepers. Because of this, they could make a loan transfer outside the transfer window and bring in Becky Spences for Spurs.

Then everything was jolly. Musovic announced her departure from the club, and Spencer returned to Spurs. We were then left with Hampton and two young keepers.

So we are now back to the present, and Chelsea signed Livia Peng, another relatively young keeper from a women's-only club in Germany called SV Werder Bremen Frauen. What do you think about Chelsea signing another keeper, a third relatively young keeper - their keepers are 19,20, 23 and 24 years old, so a young goalkeeper union.

Back to Livia Peng, the 23-year-old has been described as strong in one-on-one situations.

She has been capped for Switzerland seven times and is part of the Euro 2022 and World Cup 2023 squads. She has also represented Switzerland at the Under-17 and Under-19 levels before receiving her first senior call-up in November 2020 at the age of 17.

She had to wait another two years for her first appearance for the uncapped senior squad before making her official debut in 2023.

With Chelsea into the UEFA Women's Champions League there will be a desire to ensure Hannah Hampton gets some rest after playing every minute of the 2024/25 WSL season.

The Swiss made her Champions League debut at just 17 and also made her Women’s Champions League debut before becoming a first-team regular in 2019.  She featured on four occasions with FC Zurich and played two matches in the qualifying round for BK Hacken.

Three years later, Peng moved to BK Hacken in Sweden and was subsequently loaned out to Levante, making five appearances in Spain. Her performances attracted the attention of Werder Bremen, who captured Peng’s signature in 2023 and immediately made her their first-choice goalkeeper.

Last month, she helped Werder Bremen reach the German Women’s Cup Final for the first time. Their 3-1 victory over Hamburg in the semi-final was in front of a 57,000-strong crowd, the biggest on record for a women’s game in Germany.

Peng has signed a four-year contract with chelsea has won a league-and-cup double which FC Zurich in 2019 and 2022.

Last season, she established herself as a first-team regular with Werder Bremen in the Frauen Bundesliga, starting all but one of their matches in 2024/25 as they finished seventh.

Peng said: ‘It feels so good to be here. When I was 10, I dreamed of playing for Chelsea. My childhood dream has come true, and it's so exciting. I'm thrilled to join the Chelsea family and get started.

‘It’s such a big club. Chelsea wants to win titles, and so do I. We’re a good match. I'm hungry to win here.’
