Finally, Arsenal is catching up with Chelsea and has agreed to a world record fee for Olivia Smith from Liverpool Women, which rivals that of Chelsea signing Naomi Girma in January.
Chelsea set the one million dollars, the club from North London are set to break the £1 million (British currency)
The 20-year-old forward would be the first women’s player to surpass the seven-figure barrier.
It is reported she will complete her medical this week.
It would eclipse the $1.1m Chelsea paid San Diego Wave for Naomi Girma in January, which equates to around £890,000.
Smith played in 20 WSL games last season, scoring seven of Liverpool's 22 goals. The Reds finished seventh in the league.
She moved to Merseyside just last summer from Sporting Lisbon for a club record of £210,000. Liverpool did some great business and made a profit of under £800,000.
Liverpool have previously sold Taylor Hind to Arsenal, so this isn’t the first transfer window deal between these two sides, and it looks like Liverpool is raking in the cash.
It is understood that other bids were made from clubs in the WSL and abroad but were rejected by the Reds.
Liverpool has been without a manager since sacking Matt Beard in February.
Former Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor is the leading candidate to take over, but his player management has been questioned since the Chloe Kelly deadline-day loan move. Also, Jill Scott had a poor relationship with him at the end of her time at City, so she went on loan to Everton and Aston Villa before the Euro 2022 and retired.
In 2019, Smith, who was 15 years and 94 days old, became the youngest person to play for Canada.
She has earned 18 caps for her country.
This signing and the others in the transfer market are Arsenal's way of showing Chelsea that they can splash the cash, invest, and try to meet the standard set by the Blues, who have historically had the deepest pockets of any WSL club.
