Alyssa Thompson was listed as OUT with an “excused absence” in Angel City’s last Match against Vay FC.
This comes after rumours that she will join Chelsea as they coordinate this transfer before the deadline on the 4th of September.
It is worth noting that this was the same excuse given for Alana Kennedy and Katie Zelem's absence when they were in talks/transferring to London City Lionesses.
Bompastor feels the team is already powerful, but stressed that a club like Chelsea will always look for market opportunities.
Bompastor confirmed: “I’m satisfied with my squad.
“We already made some signings, and I think, as you can see today, some of the players have already brought a lot to the team.
“The transfer window is still open, and as Chelsea Football Club, we will always observe what’s happening and stay alert to opportunities.
“My job is to find the right balance between depth and healthy competition. I think with the strategy at this club, we are all aligned with where we want to go.
“I think it’s essential to have a mix of youth and experience in the squad, because we need to build a squad ready to compete in four competitions.”
This move is more heightened because in Chelsea's preseason match against AC Milan, Mayra Rameriz went down with a non-contact injury, possibly a Hamstring and with Lauren James out and Sam Kerr not completely ready, they must have a backup forward, which they’ll get in Thompson, so they do not heavily rely on Aggie Beever-Jones
If they sign her, I don’t believe she will play their opener on Friday against Manchester City.
Any agreement will likely break the $1 1million mark in a window of high spending across women's football. Chelsea are close to agreeing personal terms with Thompson, and talks are progressing over a multi-year contract for the 20-year-old.
There is no deal yet, but Thompson will not be involved in Angel City’s game against Bay FC tonight—with the NWSL calling it an “excused absence”—while the USA winger awaits clearance to travel to London. Optimists hope that the clubs can reach a deal in time for Thursday’s WSL transfer deadline.
She could join fellow compatriots Catarina Macario and Naomi Girma.
