Every Major Women’s Football Transfer Rumour You Need to Know This Summer

As we head into the business end of the season, the summer transfer rumour mill has already kicked off, as we are likely to see a full revolution of stars throughout the WSL and abroad.

Also, there are rumours that Lia Walti, a key holding midfield player for Arsenal who left last summer to join Juventus, is likely to return to England and the WSL next season.

Some contracts have already been made; these are renewals and therefore can happen outside the transfer window, with the likes of Lauren James signing for Chelsea till 2030 the same day as her brother's contract extension with the men's side. Though it could be concerning for Chelsea fans that the club is focusing on renewing players' contracts that do not expire this summer, rather than those of the likes of Sam Kerr, Lucy Bronze, Aggie Beever-Jones, Hannah Hampton, Catarina Macario and Millie Bright.

It is unclear about some of those Chelsea players' futures. The rumours are that Hampton is signing with the Blues, and Bright is leaving, wanting to go back North with Manchester United, her preferred destination; however, that seems unlikely, as the club is going through an overhaul of older players. Kerr and Macario look set to move to the NWSL, and the rest have had no rumours of leaving or staying at the club.

Macario has reportedly refused a contract extension with Chelsea. The player is currently injured, with no expected return date, and is unlikely to be seen again in a Chelsea shirt this season. She is a gifted attacker but has been plagued by injuries since arriving at Chelsea and has never been fully given a starting XI chance. She has technical abilities in press resistance, creativity between the lines, and goal threat from midfield zones. She has delivered decisive performances in major fixtures and has been central to Chelsea's attacking play, but injuries have left her unable to meet expectations for Chelsea.

On similar lines, according to ESPN, Mayra Ramirez has attracted interest from Real Madrid, though, given she has not played a single minute this season and has been sidelined since August, this comes as a surprise. When she is available, she is powerful, especially due to her physicality and pace. Strong hold-up play under pressure. She can also carry the ball through central zones and occupy multiple defenders. She has struggled to build sustained match rhythm, and, due to the heavy physical style it demands, it takes a lot out of her body, requiring careful load management. She was signed for Chelsea after Sam Kerr tore her ACL as a long-term successor; however, she has not lived up to that expectation. Chelsea, if they lose her, Sam Kerr, Macario and Beever-Jones will have no striker/No. 9 players in their squad and would have to go shopping for more. But given how long she's been out and how injury-prone she is, I would not be surprised if Chelsea let her go for a more consistent forward.

On the lines of Real Madrid, it is no surprise they are looking at creative replacements, as ESPN also confirmed that Caroline Weir and Naomie Feller are more likely to leave than to extend their contracts. Weir has been essential to the club's recent success with her long-range shooting threats, composure in high-pressure moments, and tactical intelligence between the lines. If they lose her, they lose leadership, creativity and clutch goals. Feller brings direct dribbling, pace, and athletic depth during transitional phases.

Spurs, however, have been concentrating on tying their players down to new long-term contracts. Olivia Holdt ends speculation as she signs a new deal, and she has been central to the team's unmounted success this season, as they currently sit in fifth place in the WSL in their strongest campaign to date. She is a direct, high-intensity winger who thrives in a transition-heavy system and explosive acceleration and vertical ball-carrying. She offers a rare blend of work rate and end product, making her tactically dependable and dangerous. Spurs have made some excellent deals this year, boosting their squad. They have also agreed to a long-term contract with Matilda Vinberg, who this season has made seven goal contributions in all competitions.

Barcelona face big stars leaving, with contracts expiring, and, due to financial restrictions, signing and re-signing players has been a major headache for the women's team, which has been losing stars and unable to replace them. Barcelona have made renewal offers to Alexia Putellas, Mapi Leon and Salma Paralluelo. It is well known that Barcelona players are among the most loyal to their club. Talks are ongoing, particularly with Alexa; the issue lies in how much they will be paid and the likelihood of serious cuts due to the men's side's financial misgivings. But the decisions rest with the players. For Barcelona, it would be a great tragedy to lose Putellas and Paralluelo. Putellas brings identity to the team, tempo control, spatial intelligence, leadership and emotional and artificial reference point. Paralluelo is a long, explosive attack, vertical-paced and pressing. Mapi Leon would be the most likely player to leave. While she is a central part of the team, she is on the older side and has caused significant controversy and issues with the team.
