In a shocking turn of events, Katie McCabe just jumped ships into the bed of the enemy, metaphorically. She will join Arsenal, who are sworn enemies of Chelsea in the WSL, a rivalry that goes back decades, as these sides constantly compete for silverware each season.
The 30-year-old spent 11 years in North London and became a strong fan favourite for wearing her heart on her sleeve and her fierce nature. For Gooners, this came as quite a shock, with some branding her as a ‘traitor’. However, moves from Chelsea and Arsenal have occurred in women's football, though not as much in recent years, with many players like Alessia Russo and Lauren James having played for both teams.
She has signed a three-year deal with an option to extend, as the club plans for the long term, and, given her experience, versatile nature, and leadership-focused approach, she is likely to replace Millie Bright, their current captain, who retired from that role.
In her first interview, she was asked if she had a message for the fans. She responded honestly, saying, “Don't hate me,” likely referencing her pulling Alyssa Thompson's hair in this season's Champions League quarterfinals and not receiving the red card she should have got. A moment that Chelsea women are recreating in the world sevens final walkout: mannequin challenge.
Speaking after her move was confirmed, Katie McCabe said she felt ready for a “new chapter” in her career and expressed excitement about joining Chelsea.
She stated that she was ready to perform for the badge and looked forward to walking out at Stamford Bridge as a home player. She also emphasised her desire to compete for trophies on all fronts.
McCabe said, “It’s a new chapter in my career. This is something that I feel I’m ready for right now.”
She added that Chelsea’s history of success was a major attraction and that she wanted to continue driving that success forward. “This club has been successful for so many years. I want to keep pushing and driving that, and for me, it’s about bringing that success back to Chelsea.”
She also highlighted her excitement about the club’s fanbase, stating that she was looking forward to being part of the Stamford Bridge atmosphere and contributing to a winning environment.
She moved to Arsenal in 2015 and has won it all over that period: the FA Cup in her first season, the WSL in 2019, most importantly the Champions League last season, and three League Cup titles. She made 305 appearances for the club.
She has made history for her country as well. She became the captain of the Republic of Ireland in 2017. She became the youngest-ever captain of the national team at the age of 21 and led them out in the 2023 World Cup, their first-ever appearance at the tournament, and scored their first-ever World Cup goal from a corner in their opening match against Canada. She was the first Irish woman ever to compete for the Ballon d’Or in 2023 and the first Irish player, male or female, to be nominated since Roy Keane in 2000.
This next part will likely hurt Arsenal fans' hearts when they learn that she was a Chelsea fan as a child, since her brother was a passionate supporter of the club. She also idolised Chelsea and Ireland legend Damien Duff, who played for the club during its early Premier League success under José Mourinho.
She said she used to follow Duff closely because he played in the same position she admired and represented Ireland at the highest level.
She reflected that joining Chelsea now felt “surreal,” especially because she grew up watching players like Duff, Didier Drogba, and Arjen Robben at Stamford Bridge.
McCabe also mentioned that she used to ask for Chelsea shirts as gifts when she was growing up, reinforcing the emotional significance of the move. She wanted to get each season's new kit as a gift, so while she might have been at Arsenal for over a decade, her love and connection to Chelsea started from a young age.
However, this move has been years in the making and is not the first time she has been linked to the club. Chelsea first approached her in 2015 when she wished to move to the league, but she chose Arsenal. They reportedly attempted again in 2023. Arsenal only approached her in April, reportedly offering a contract renewal b, but she had already decided to seek a new challenge.
This signing, while it might not look like a reliable one, is for Chelsea, with Millie Bright retired, Nathalie Bjorn and Naomi Girma injury-prone. With Niamh Charles attracting interest from the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid, and Lucy Bronze out of contract this summer, this signing is currently planned to bring an immediate contribution to the team. In contrast, Veerle Buurman and Chloe Sarwie are long-term/future stars.
Several factors influenced McCabe’s decision to leave Arsenal.
She had spent a decade at the club and achieved major success, meaning she felt she had reached the limit of what she could accomplish there. She wanted a fresh challenge at the highest level, and Chelsea’s sporting project, leadership role offer, and long-term ambition aligned with her goals.
She said in her first interview that she had many conversations with Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor that were influential in her decision, as she was impressed by the club’s direction and its belief in her leadership.
Her move represents both a sporting decision and a symbolic shift between two of England’s biggest women’s clubs.
