Chelsea Favourites, Bunny Shaw for Golden Boot: Bold Predictions for the 2025/26 WSL Season

Published on 4 September 2025 at 18:46

As the women’s season is about to start, here are my predictions for the season ahead for all categories and why they have been chosen. Plus, it seems Opta also agrees with my decisions, so who needs a supercomputer when you have me? Leave yours down below->

WSL

Chelsea will always be a big favourite for this trophy; they have won it six times in a row and went unbeaten last season, so they definitely have a target on their back. Unlike last season, I believe it will be close between them and Arsenal. City and United do not have the players to compete in league football or other competitions, whereas Arsenal and Chelsea have that depth in the squad.

Chelsea begins the season not just as favourites, but as overwhelming ones. In the Opta supercomputer’s 10,000 simulations, they won the title 72.4% of the time; given they’ve won six in a row, can you blame it?

League Cup

The Subway League Cup has been won by Arsenal seven times, the most of any club. It is an area in which they have excelled in recent seasons, last winning it in the 2023/24 season. I believe Arsenal will be the top contenders for the league, FA Cup and Champions League. Still, I feel they might burn out from the expectation as Champions League holders and be unable to give 110% in all competitions, so I believe they will win the League Cup. Still, after March, it gets busier with all the other competitions, and that’s where they could fall.

FA Cup

Chelsea could pick up this title, but it could be up for grabs from City or United. Manchester United have been in the final for the last three seasons; however, losing out on the first and most recent to C, they are going through a regeneration and have lost significant players, but unlike United, Chelsea and Arsenal, they do not have Champions League football. They are going through a regeneration and have lost significant players, but unlike United, Chelsea, and Arsenal, they do not have Champions League football. However, given their calibre, abilities, and drive, I feel Chelsea is the one to beat. Unlike the men’s, they have an epic performance rate at the new Wembley.

Champions League

This will be between Chelsea, Arsenal and Lyon, given the fact Barcelona lost last year's final and now have a depleted squad of 17 registered players and have lost a lot I do not think they have the depth they once had to win the quadruple. I feel like Chelsea on paper should win with their depth however they seem to fall down at Barcelona but given their lack of depth it could benefit the blues. Arsenal come in as the holder and those who upset Barcelona by winning the Champions League last season and shocking everyone with what happened

WSL Golden Glove

It has to be Hannah Hampton after the summer she has had her confidence will be great saving four penalties one from two time ballon d’Or winner Astana Bonmati winning both those shootouts. Becoming England number one just before the Euros and winning back-to-back euros. She is also helped by an amazing defence in front one of the best in the league. They went unbeaten last season and conceded the least amount of goals and she won the award last season too. I believe the one person who could compete with her is hall on Tullis-Joyce who won the award along side her last season but Manchester United have since lost a lot of players and have not signed many and will have four competitions to play in something they are not used to whereas Hampton will be so Tullis-Joyce might have issues with fatigue.

WSL Golden Boot- Bunny Shaw.

She won it last season by scoring 21 gaols that was joint with Alessia Russo. But unlike Russo Shaw campaign was affected by injury, so if Shaw can maintain her fitness she could push further than she did last season. Her contenders for this would be Russo and possibly Sam Kerr depending on her recovery but it has been announced she will take part in the Chelsea opener of the WSL.

Teams to get promoted to the WSL- Birmingham City and Newcastle

From the 2025/26 season two teams will come up from the WSL2 (Championship) to the WSL as it expands from 12 teams to 14 teams.

Unlike Crystal Palace, City seem to have the financial backing for the WSL to not go up and back down again they were within a goal of being promoted this time but it went to the final day and they drew 2-2 to London City Lionesses with a draw giving the promotion spot to the London side.

Newcastle have big names in WSL football with Demi Stokes and also Jordan Nobbs who hold the record for most appearance of 208 within the league so she knows a lot about it. Also since their new ownership joined they have been promoted and more money has been invested into the side which is the clear difference between the two top divisions in women’s football.

team to get relegated from the WSL- Leicester City

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Leicester City are the team most at risk of falling into the relegation play-off, with a 25.7%probability of finishing bottom.

The season has not even started and they have sacked their manager and now have an interim manager so they are not starting on the front foot. Also previous seasons they would do enough to stay up and hope whoever came up went back down but London City Lionesses wouldn’t let that happened and unlike previous teams they have bought up big players.

Also believe Leicester do not have the financial backing like other clubs especially due to the men’s team getting relegated last season as well they do not have the resources to keep up in the WSL.
