WSL Super Sunday: Title race twists, survival battles & everything in between

Published on 27 September 2025 at 18:41

This Sunday marks a pivotal round of fixtures in the Women’s Super League, with five matches across the day that could shape the early table. Chelsea have the chance to go four points clear at the top, Manchester United and Manchester City will be desperate to keep pace, and Brighton, Leicester, and West Ham are looking to make their own statements. Every match carries weight, whether it’s the title race, European qualification, or the battle for survival. Here’s the full preview of what to expect.

Brighton vs Everton (12:00)

Brighton head into this clash buoyed by their most recent WSL result, a convincing 4–1 win over West Ham boosted their confidence and sharpened their attacking edge. Everton, in contrast, comes into the weekend off a 3–1 defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup, exposing weaknesses in defence and a lack of cutting edge. Both clubs will likely be in the mid-table mix, so these early points are crucial. Victory here would help Brighton solidify their upward momentum, while Everton desperately needs to respond to avoid slipping into early relegation trouble.

Leicester City vs Tottenham Hotspur (12:00)

Leicester struggled for consistency at the start of the season and knew they must be more clinical to establish themselves higher up the table. Tottenham, meanwhile, are showing signs of progress but still need to convert possession and creativity into results; they have lacked goals, scoring only four in three games. Their recent League Cup outing highlighted individual sparks, but they are still chasing rhythm as a team as they drew 1-1 with Aston Villa and won the bonus in a penalty shootout 7-6. This fixture carries significance because both clubs are in danger of drifting into mid-table obscurity; three points here would provide the platform to push towards the top half.

Liverpool vs Manchester United (12:00)

Liverpool’s recent form has been patchy, and this game provides the perfect chance to lift their season in front of a home crowd. Gareth Taylor is still committed to his style of play, which does not work with the players he has at his disposal, and Liverpool, unlike the talent he had at City. Manchester United come in with a rocky few weeks, having thrashed London City Lionesses 5–1 before holding Arsenal to a 0–0 draw and dropping points on Chelsea, who are already ahead, proving their ability to attack and defend at the highest level. The stakes here are high: Liverpool wants to show that it can challenge the top clubs, while United needs three points to stay close to Chelsea in terms of the title and European race. With bragging rights and momentum on the line, this could be one of the weekend’s most fiery fixtures.

Manchester City vs London City Lionesses (12:00)

Manchester City will be expected to dominate this fixture and keep pressure on Chelsea in the title race. However, they will be without winger Lauren Hemp, who is out for several weeks with an ankle injury, which will blow their attacking options. London City Lionesses arrive confident after upsetting Everton 2-1, and as newcomers to the WSL, they see every fixture as an opportunity to prove they belong. They also beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the League Cup group stage, day one. For City, this is a must-win to avoid losing ground at the top, while for London City, even a competitive performance would strengthen their belief that they can survive at this level. The London side wants to build momentum after facing Arsenal and United in their opening games.

West Ham United vs Chelsea (14:30)

West Ham will set up to frustrate Chelsea, using a compact defensive shape and counterattacking where possible, but they face the most daunting test of the weekend. Chelsea remains unbeaten in the WSL (the only club to be), and after edging Leicester 1–0 last time out, they can extend their lead at the top of the table. If they win, they will move four points clear of Arsenal, and could prove decisive later in the title race. Even a draw would be a significant achievement for West Ham, but for Chelsea, this is a chance to stamp their dominance on the league and widen the gap to their closest rivals. West Ham sits at the bottom of the table, yet has yet to get a point on the board.
