While Chelsea extended their unbeaten run, now a WSL record, to 34 games, they have not won consecutive WSL games since December 2021.
The Blues haven’t lost in the league since they lost 4-3 to Liverpool in May 2024 under former boss Emma Hayes.
The result against Liverpool was their consecutive league 1-1 draw, though their midweek performance in the Champions League was much different, with a 6-0 win for St Polten.
The pair are at opposite ends of the table. Chelsea had only conceded four goals in the league coming into the fixture, while Liverpool had only scored four.
Millie Bright now holds the record for the most WSL appearances, with 211; however, her performances have been heavily criticised. Her lack of speed gave Beata Olsson the space to score. The Liverpool star is the first player in six years for Liverpool to score in three consecutive games in the WSL.
Even more concerns were that, after the result of the game against Liverpool, which Chelsea were expected to win, mainly as Liverpool had only managed their first point last week and had not played especially well.
Was it because Sonia Bompastor rotated the squad too much that there was no connection and gelling between the players, impacting their ability to find the back of the net?
Most inside St Helens would have expected Chelsea to thrash Liverpool.
But the Blues - who made five changes from the team that beat St Polten 6-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday - were limited by Liverpool, not having a shot on target after their opening goal in the ninth minute.
The concerns only mounted when Sonia Bompastor did not turn up for the post-match press conference, according to sources within the Chelsea camp, as there was no demand for one. Though if Chelsea is dropping points easily and falling behind in the WSL, is that not a game or a question to ask of her?
Was it smart for Chelsea to rest Sam Kerr ahead of their game against Barcelona, or did they underestimate Liverpool and assume it would be an easy win?
Did karma hit them? Should they have played their first team, and do they still have a chance of winning the WSL after dropping more points?
Last season, the Blues dropped points in the league only three times. They've now matched that tally just nine games into this campaign.
Chelsea were unable to keep up with Manchester City at the top of the table after dropping points.
Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor told Sky Sports:
"The performance was not good enough from us. That's not the performance we wanted to put on the pitch.
"We didn't concede a lot. They only had one big chance, and they scored it. In that moment, we didn't defend well enough.
"We were not able to create as much as we wanted. The few opportunities we created, we were not clinical enough to get the second goal."
