Chelsea 1-1 London City Lionesses: Goodwin equaliser, Beever-Jones injury and fan anger at The Den

Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by London City Lionesses in a controversial and tense game at The Den, with the atmosphere shaped by anger from Millwall fans towards London City following their split from the club.

Chelsea started on the front foot and took the lead through Johanna Rytting Kaneryd after good link-up play from Aggie Beever-Jones, but the game shifted in the second half after Beever-Jones went off injured. From that point, London City had more opportunities, testing Hannah Hampton and forcing Chelsea into blocks and clearances, before Isobel Goodwin scored in the 82nd minute after a save was not held. Chelsea looked dejected at full time, while London City ended a four-game losing run.

A controversial game at The Den saw shocking anger from Millwall fans towards London City Lionesses. This club was formerly Millwall Lionesses before breaking away due to a lack of support from the owners and a desire for financial and administrative control.

The fans made their feelings clear throughout, frustrated that the women’s team had not been given proper consideration. In response, it was confirmed that all money made from this game at the stadium would go directly to the women’s team.

Chelsea, resting key players including Keira Walsh and Lucy Bronze ahead of their Champions League game against Arsenal, named one of their youngest sides since 2013. Despite the changes, they started on the front foot.

Inside the opening minutes, Lexi Potter fired a right-footed shot from outside the box that was just too high. Chelsea continued to push early, with Aggie Beever-Jones seeing an effort saved in the 12th minute after being set up by Alyssa Thompson.

Defensively, Chelsea had a makeshift back line. Kadeisha Buchanan was back from an ACL injury, Sjoeke Nüsken was playing at right back, and Chloe Sarwie, making just her fifth substitute appearance, impressed early. Sarwie produced a great tackle in the 12th minute to prevent a counterattack and showed she is ready for the left-back position.

London City showed promise in wide areas, especially around the 14th minute, but there was no one in the box to finish chances. That lack of presence proved costly.

Chelsea took the lead in the 22nd minute. A flick on from Aggie Beever-Jones found Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, who produced a right-footed shot from the centre of the box into the bottom right corner. It was her second league goal of the season.

London City continued to struggle in front of the goal. The forward was missing, while crosses came in, but no striker was in the box. Their defensive record also reflected their issues, with only one clean sheet in 12, and only West Ham had kept fewer.

There were moments of frustration. Nikita Parris went down under pressure from Wieke Kaptein to win a free kick, and Grace Geyoro’s effort was straight at Hannah Hampton. Erin Cuthbert almost capitalised later in the half, but Elene Lete was sharp off her line to collect.

At half time, Chelsea made a change with Kaneryd replaced, while London City brought on Lucía Corrales.

Chelsea started the second half as they ended the first. In the 47th minute, Beever-Jones again forced a save from Lete after another pass from Thompson.

London City responded with its own efforts. In the 52nd minute, Corrales had a shot blocked, and Jana Fernández fired over from distance following a corner.

Buchanan continued to impress. You would not be able to guess this was only her second start since November 2024 after being out for 469 days with an ACL injury. She looked composed despite being thrown in due to injuries to Björn, Bright and Carpenter.

Chelsea created chances but could not finish. Alyssa Thompson saw an effort blocked in the 57th minute. Frustration with the referee also grew, as challenges went unpunished and a clear foul on Erin Cuthbert was initially ignored.

The key moment came in the 63rd minute when Aggie Beever-Jones went down in serious pain after her ankle rolled awkwardly in a challenge. She was visibly upset and had to come off. From that point, Chelsea lost control.

Without a like-for-like forward replacement, London City Lionesses began to create more opportunities. Delphine Cascarino had a header blocked in the 70th minute, and more chances followed as Chelsea struggled to clear their lines.

In the 74th minute, Hannah Hampton produced a strong save to push a shot onto the crossbar from Julia Roddar. Wassa Sangaré also had a header blocked as the pressure built.

By the 76th minute, London City were building real momentum. Kosovare Asllani had a huge opportunity with Hampton off her line, but Erin Cuthbert cleared off the line, with Naomi Girma also throwing herself into the defensive effort. Chelsea were just about holding on in a nervy spell.

The equaliser came in the 82nd minute. Hampton saved the initial effort but could not hold it, and Isobel Goodwin reacted quickest to head in from close range.

London City continued to push. In the 85th minute, Goodwin forced another save from Hampton following a cross from Asllani.

Chelsea had one final chance in stoppage time, but Lauren James saw her shot from outside the box saved.

At full-time, Chelsea players looked incredibly dejected, collapsing to the floor after letting the lead slip. The result leaves questions around their push for Champions League football next season.

For London City Lionesses, it was a deserved point that ended a four-game losing run in all competitions, achieved in difficult circumstances both on and off the pitch.
