Controversial Cuts at the Women’s Euros: Who’s Out and Why It Matters

As we head into the Euros, here is the list of controversial selections in the women's Euros: those unable to go due to Injury or illness or those just not chosen, which might shock you.

From the triple English exclusion to no Wendie Renard, the French Captain for the last two years.

England is without Mary Earp and Fran Kirby, who announced their retirement ahead of the Euros. While Earp's explanation was to let young players have a chance, she leaves the weight of the goalkeeper on Hannah Hampton, who has not played an international tournament, than two keepers who have not been capped for England. Kirby retired due to not being in the Euros squad, and she would have retired after the tournament, so I just brought it forward. Final Lionesses, who made themselves unavailable for selection due to fitness and mental health issues, were Millie Bright. That is a three-Euro-winning player not in the squad.

France is without three big senior players, which could be a bonus for England as they face off in the first game on Saturday at 8 p.m.

France is without captain Wendie Renard, Eugenie Le Sommer, and Kenza Dali, left out by new coach Bonadei, who seems to have rebuilt the French side with youth, including Grace Geyoro and Marie-Antoinette Katoto. Vice-Captain Le Sommer, the all-time scorer and appearance-maker, misses out. The Guardian has described this move as a ‘shock cull’ to bring in a new approach and different results for the team. The manager cited a desire for a fresh perspective and quoted Albert Einstein about repeatedly expecting different results by doing the same thing.

Spain shocked the world by excluding the all-time top scorer for the country, Jenni Hermoso, from the Euros squad, who has had to endure a lot of pain and ridicule over the last two years. The new coach, Montse Tome, marks the exclusion as ‘sporting reasons’, stating that the 23 players selected are the best. She said that all the decisions she has made and continues to make since I became a coach are due to sporting reasons. However, she has noted that she could play for the national team again.

Germany does not have any exclusions that have hit the headlines, but it has seen players retire or be sidelined, which will test it significantly. After Alessandra Popp's retirement, the squad is led by Guilia Gwinn, Jule Brand, and Lea Schuller. Lena Oberdorf is sidelined due to injury, which is a concern in the midfield depth.
