The penalty shootout
This was the worst penalty shootout ever. My big fear is that people who did not watch the first 120 minutes will see it as an
An example of why they believe women should not play football.
Of the 14 penalties taken, five were scored, six were saved, and three from the Swedes were missed.
England became the first side at the Women's Euros to miss three successive penalties in a shootout and still go through.
The 36% spot-kick conversion rate in Zurich was the worst shootout in the competition's history, lower than the 2017 semi-final between Denmark and Austria.
Falk made a Women's Euros record four saves in the shootout but lost partly because she stepped up and missed her side's potential match-winning fifth penalty.
Lauren James is not a penalty taker—she has never been, and she’s missed before. You can be a great striker and not take penalties. Ellen White is an excellent England all-time goal scorer who didn’t take penalties. I do believe if England did not win, James would face the same hate and racism she experienced at the 2023 World Cup.
The England players all were on target, which cannot be said for some of the Swedish players however they had no power on the ball and the went down the bottom of the goal which is easier for the keeper to save which is what Falk did who had an incredible shootout minus her attempt but they were poor shots from the lionesses
Leah Williamson joked that they had been practising penalties, even if the result suggests otherwise, with a 3-2 penalty after only four of the last 11 penalties were scored before they won.
An ex-England keeper, Rachel Brown-Finnis, said, " These are acts with nine lives, the lionesses.”
There’s been a lot of chat about being proper England, and a journalist asked Lucy Bronze if we just saw proper Lucy Bronze. She responded, “I think proper Lucy Bronze is proper England.”
Lucy Bronze's penalty had a speed of 102.51 km/h.
The right back watched Falk like a hawk, realising she dived early. It is risky for a keeper to stand still and go down the middle, so Lucy Bronze put it down with such force.
She also offered more stats showing that whoever goes first is likelier to win. She responded to her knowledge with, “I love maths. I’ve been around long enough. I have to know the ins and outs of all the games.”
She also went on to say the impact on her of standing a bit in front and celebrating each goal to give confidence to the team
Chloe Kelly, who assisted both goals to get England back into the game, scored the decisive penalty after Lauren James, Beth Mead and Alex Greenwood missed their penalties, and Lucy Bronze and Alessia Russo scored.
Chloe Kelly slammed her foot down and laughed at the keeper because she scored with her signature bounce. This is what I would call shithorseary. To make it even better, she needed the pee in the shootout, the composure she must have had.
The biggest concern I had, and my suspicions were genuine, was those individuals who did not watch the match or have never watched or played in a high-stakes penalty shootout saying they could do better in the Sunday League, their 10-year-old son could do better, or that the equal pay gap should be enlarged. Let me remind you, England lost in a penalty shootout in 2021. While this was a terrible penalty shootout, England women dug deep and won something the men’s side cannot say. Also, they demand equal pay after winning England's ONLY EUROS. The men did not get it over the line.
