Spain vs Germany: Clash of Titans in EURO 2025 Semi-Final – Possession vs Power, Who Prevails?

Published on 21 July 2025 at 18:34

The World Cup holders face the eight-time European Championship winners, Germany.

Spain had an easier quarter-finals, finally breaking the deadlock against Switzerland to win 2-0 after two penalty misses from Mariona Caldentey and Alexia Putellas.

Germany played with 10 players from the 13th minute against tournament winner favourites France, taking them to penalties and winning them, with Ann-Katrin Berger making two crucial saves.

Previous meetings

In the last eight meetings, Germany has been unbeaten, winning five and drawing three, with the goal aggregate being 18-3.

The last meeting was at the 2024 Olympics, where Germany beat Spain 1-0 to win the bronze medal.

Their last meeting at a major tournament was the women's Euro 2022 group stage, which Germany won 2-0.

In their first competitive meeting, Spain returned from two down to get a last-gasp 2-2 qualifying draw in Motril in November 2011, thereby ending Germany's 12-year-long 38-game winning run in UEFA European Women's Championship fixtures.

Germany

Germany is in a record 11th semi-final, all of which have occurred in the last 12 editions of the competition.

Germany fought all the way to penalties against France to make it to the quarter-finals. They shockingly finished second in their group after losing 4-1 to Sweden.

Nevertheless, the duo Klara Bühl and Jule Brand have been Germany’s engine, leading the competition in progressive carries into the box

With their backline weakened and Spain likely to dominate possession, Germany will need counter-attacking bite, athleticism, and tactical discipline to upset La Roja.

Spain

The reigning world champions became the first team to score five goals in both of the opening two games of a Women's Euro and equalised the England record of 14 goals in a single group stage in 2022.

They then beat Switzerland to win their first-ever Women's EURO finals knockout game; two years ago, Spain got their first major tournament knockout victory of any sort in the World Cup round of 16, also against Switzerland, and lifted the trophy.

Spain is a master of possession and thrives when it has it, especially when controlling the midfield with precision passing and relentlessly pressing opponents.

Areas Germany can capitalise on against Spain are aerially and open space, which makes them vulnerable and easier to exploit their back line, as they have two clean sheets in the last 11 games.

Team news

Germany

Germany has had a crazy Euros so far, losing Captain Gwinn in the first game in the group stage, two red cards in the last two games. They will be without Sjoeke Nusken, who is on two yellows, and Kathrin Hendrich, who received a red card after being sent off for pulling Griedge Mbock's hair.

Germany team director Nia Künzer has defended Kathrin Hendrich for the hair-pulling incident, leading to her early red card in the European Championship quarter-final win against France.

Sarai Linder ruled out of the semi-final vs Spain with an ankle injury. Her availability for a potential final remains uncertain.

Predicted XI (SF vs Spain, 23 July): Berger; Wamser, Kleinherne, Minge, Knaak, Kett; Brand, Lohmann, Senß, Bühl; Hoffmann

Spain

Laia Aleixandri picked up a yellow card in the first half against Switzerland. If Spain reach the semi-final, she'll miss it.

A tough loss for Spain's defence, especially at this stage.

Predicted XI (SF vs Germany, 23 July): Cata Coll; Batlle, Paredes, Méndez, Olga; Bonmatí, Patri, Alexia; Mariona, Esther González, Pina
