League Cup Drama: West Ham Fight Back, Southampton Clinch Derby as Big Clubs Focus on Europe

While Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal have mid-week games in the Champions League with mixed results, this week we had two of the fixtures for the League Cup the rest will be played on the 16th October or the 19th October in the second round of fixtures.

West Ham got their second win of the season, both in the League Cup. They beat Brighton 2-1 in a hard-fought victory. They maintained a strong start in the League Cup, unlike the WSL, where they have not won at all this season.

Brighton started on the front foot, scoring in the 16th minute through Carla Camacho, who capitalised on a rebound after Rosa Kafaji’s strike hit the post, giving the visitors an early advantage.

The home side responded as Serbian Piubel levelled the scores with a clinical finish into the roof of the net, showcasing composure under pressure.  The game was decided when Shekiera Martinez slotted home after a clearance fell kindly to her, sealing the win for the Hammers.

Manager Rehanne Skinner praised the team’s spirit after the game, stating, “Tonight sums up the togetherness and spirit in the team.”

Another battle was between Southampton and Portsmouth. Again, the home side won the game. Southampton won the South Coast derby thanks to a brilliant long-range strike from Michaela McAlonie. Her effort from outside the box was the difference in a tightly fought contest. The visitors battled hard throughout the game, especially with significant absences due to injury. The list is Sophie Barker and Emma Jones, while Angelina Nixon was a potential returnee after a minor hamstring issue.

Despite creating multiple chances, Portsmouth could not get through Southampton's well-organised defence to maintain the victory.

The Portsmouth manager reflected on the challenges of missing key players like Sophie Barker and Emma Jones due to injury. They praised the team’s fighting spirit and resilience despite the 1–0 defeat.

The Southampton manager highlighted the importance of McAlonie’s match-winning goal and the team’s disciplined performance. They emphasised taking their opportunities efficiently and keeping a clean defensive structure.
