Birmingham City Women were crowned Women’s Super League 2 champions after a composed and clinical 2-0 victory over Charlton Athletic Women on the final day of the season, securing promotion in a high-stakes encounter at The Valley.

The significance of the fixture was clear before kick-off. Charlton started the day top of the table, knowing a draw would be enough to secure promotion, while Birmingham required victory to overtake them. With Crystal Palace Women also in contention elsewhere, the title race remained finely balanced until the final 90 minutes.

Charlton began with intensity, pressing high and forcing early set pieces as they looked to assert control in front of their home support. They created promising openings in the early stages but were unable to convert that pressure into clear chances on target.

Birmingham, by contrast, grew steadily into the game. Their approach was patient and structured, focusing on defensive organisation and quick transitions. That discipline was rewarded in the 27th minute when Wilma Leidhammar opened the scoring, finishing from close range after a well-worked move into the box.

The goal shifted momentum. Birmingham became more confident in possession and more effective out of it, disrupting Charlton’s rhythm and limiting their attacking threat. By halftime, the visitors had established control despite Charlton’s strong start.

The decisive moment came early in the second half. In the 54th minute, Leidhammar scored her second of the afternoon, finishing from inside the area to double Birmingham’s advantage and put them firmly in control of the title race.

Charlton responded by committing more players forward, increasing the tempo and delivering balls into the penalty area, but Birmingham’s defensive structure remained resolute. They won key duels across the pitch and restricted Charlton to a few clear efforts on target.

The statistical picture reflected Birmingham’s control. They were more efficient in front of goal and dominant defensively, recording a higher tackle success rate and managing the game effectively in the closing stages.

As the final whistle approached, Birmingham slowed the tempo and maintained possession, preventing Charlton from building sustained pressure. When it came, the full-time whistle confirmed a 2-0 victory that secured both the title and promotion back to the Women’s Super League.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace also confirmed promotion as part of the league’s expansion, while Charlton dropped to third place despite starting the day in pole position.

Attention now turns to the play-off, where Charlton will face Leicester City Women for the final place in next season’s top flight. Charlton will look to respond to the disappointment of missing automatic promotion, while Leicester aim to retain its Women’s Super League status.

For Birmingham, however, the outcome is already secured. In the most important match of their season, they delivered a performance defined by composure, discipline and clinical finishing to confirm their return to the top tier as champions.
